Rafael RochaPrado
Portuguese Version
Residência artística no Programa Bolsa Pampulha (2024) e no Atelier Galeria FFAC, no Porto, Portugal.

Starting from the Upper Madeira River (Alto Rio Madeira), Rafael Rocha Prado’s painting uses pictorial matter as a space for elaborating memory and the history of the Amazon. His research investigates processes of silencing and the endurance of local knowledge by fusing the human figure, landscape, and regional fauna onto the canvas.
In the series Povos Amazônicos não morrem, viram sementes ("Amazonian Peoples Don't Die, They Become Seeds") and in the recent developments of his studio practice, Rocha reconfigures the tradition of figuration. The artist integrates the corporeality of peasants, rubber tappers, and territorial leaders into the mineral structures and animal presences of the forest. Built through dense layers of oil paint, the compositions transcend static portraiture: human anatomy and the forest's bicho-espíritos (spirit-animals) constitute the same mass of color and paint, asserting the endurance of those who inhabit the territory.
Anchored in encantarias (enchantments) and the scale of everyday Amazonian life, the work establishes painting as a retention of time and an affirmation of autonomous territorial thought.
Rafael Rocha's work is part of the collection of the National Museum of Fine Arts (Museu Nacional de Belas Artes) in Rio de Janeiro.
